The Yukon Quest is leaving tomorrow to Fairbanks (Alaska). A 1650 km race across the frozen wastelands of the Yukon and Alaska ...
A big thought for my neighbor who would Jocelyne Leblanc launches for the first time in the adventure ... One for my friend Hugh Neff which is a regular, but finishing a race in this way remains me a feat! Technically he win the race Deniere years, but due to a penalty for having taken a wrong trail done it awarded two penalty hours ... And finished second with 10 minutes delay! Wish him the chance to win it for good this year! More info: http://www.yukonquest.com/

the footsteps of the wolves, or a night at Mud Lake!

little tale, but with a Pelet photos to put you in the embiance!

Saturday, end morning, the weather and the beautiful, the temperature of -5 ° C, the loaded sled, harnessed the dogs ... We are leaving! Branch Mud Lake, a small lake about 45 km away across the lakes and mountains ... All in the magical setting!
The aim go for a nice little training, one night passs the stars and watch the wolves if they want to come! This is an area where there were plenty at the beginning of winter ...

For this weekend, I took Jeremy, a student of Icy Waters, who is from Vancouver. For him, never mounted on a sled, never camped outside in the winter ... What a novelty!
here we went, little bit of fun on my first km with ten dogs, but rather fast speed that stabilizes a ten km / h. We cross fish the lake from side to side is 14 km, under beautiful lights!

Then we enter the famous unnamed valley, but one of the most beautiful place I've never spent! The light falling, the shadows lengthen, the colors change ... It's beautiful! A run without incident! Just two three passing of another team who are returning, the first: my boss Jon skijoring with four dogs and a poulka ... in a raid (for him)! Usually I'm calm for access crossings, but, we mounted, Jon downhill on a trail of barely the width of two sled ... And me with my ten cats have some very bad habits, they go eat their colleagues across mostly as they do not connaisent! I see red ... I slowed down, and leaves m'arette s'exiter dogs ... Then when Jon is 15 meters from me, I give the starting signal. Everyone Page School ... I was going at full speed next to Jon Tucker and two Indy *** Service took the opportunity to try to beat it or at least growl good shots ... But while ordering! However, no problem with Jeremy and the six dogs!
We meet two other teams, including one with 14 dogs ... But no problems this time!
A further we can pass a "herd" of fifty ptarmigan ... Two of which will end in the evening meal! It is always good!

We reached the hut the night ... A small fire inside, melt water for dogs, and cook for everyone ... Time to do anything, the evening is already well underway!
We sleep outside under the beautiful star to be closer to the dogs ... In case the wolves come!
During the night the sky is overcast, the snow has arrived! It snowing lightly all night but not much serious ... A little short on Sunday all day!

The departure Sunday is a little more folk! dogs began to be in good form, no tree to hang sleds ... We just sent off with a snow anchors. But even double, well planted in a moderately packed snow sled and returned it ... We left a lot of problems! As a size that we Dogs are adding, anchors starts to slip then fly one after the other! Sensing the trend coming, I hang the two teams in the aftermath with the lifeline and application jeremy take my dog heads ... Like this all remains to be pres ... wise I rembale the steak on the run-out (cable or dogs are hung by night) and put them in a sled. I jump on my sled, told jeremy to join his ... When he realizes that the bag with the other steak-out is a few meters away outside in front of the cabin ... I shouted to him to go take it as I am before, I can not move ... For all the INSAT unstable equilibrium which holds dogs in place does again but for how long?? He did not throw my cats are launching all together in their harness dragging my two anchors and the brake on which I stand! I am forced to jettison the lifeline that connects to my own team ... Under penalty dénuquer these two leaders!
The fact that my sled I advanced barely a meter, motivation has on the dogs that Jeremy also trying out their strength! I want my sled with one hand, one foot on the anchor, the other on the brake ... And tries to catch the flying leaders. These are retarded! I can just touch them with your fingertips! I manage to catch tog a line in the middle of the team that I draw to me ... but I'm caught in the middle ... these my brethren who do not move, or not at the moment and the others who take all they can ...
But mine has come shoot again ... And I must choose! Which of the two sled let go?? I can not stay in the middle of two eight dogs ... The reason that I would keep mine, faster ... But the fact is that handball is more slippery than a bar chord ... So this is my team that I see you go ... I shout after him jeremy diss to hurry ... Then jump on the portion of his sled bag ... The hunt begins ... continued They were 500 meters ahead of us, but it will at least 3 to 5 km to catch up ... Again, how to catch my flight sled?? Each time we arrive at its height dogs reapartent more beautiful! Finally, I manage to throw the anchor Jeremy in my brake, which is hampering a good shot on the sled arrierepermet slow down everything, and coupled to a Hoooooo can stop them any time! I jump on my sled ... From now on, everyone's *****! I anchors tangled in the pads, one that is threaded inside ... Technically impossible, the string is shorter than the runner ... Who knows how it happened the! I need at least a good km to reach out to the ! Only one solution: Press has some speed to stretch the string and get it out the back in the same way it came ... It's a strain in which it is planted which will let me remove it ...

direction Now the return to calm ...

As dogs move forward, although I decided to go for an alternative ... But there are between 25 and 50 cm of fresh snow on the runway ... After 5 to 7 km, I completely lost track at the exit of a canyon ... We brew in more than 1 m deep snow for a good momenent then I did turn around to everyone and we go ...

arrived at Pierre pm to 9 am after a great day ... Time to feed the dogs, pack up the business and get home it is 10:30.
weekeend Another beautiful, but Monday may be hard again ...

Year soon,

Matthew
