Gentoo Linux there is a java-config to configure the version of Java runtime that you want to use by default.
With Ubuntu you should use the command update-alternatives
For different because I need to use the latest Java version from SUN and in packages found in ability do not necessarily correspond to the latest version.
sudo update-alternatives - install / usr / bin / java java / opt / jdk / jre / bin / java 1
sudo update-alternatives - config java
during this last order I verais submit a list of Java available on the system and I could only choose one of them with the number on the left.

More information is available on the excellent site of the French Community of Ubuntu users .
