Born in a house in the Rue du Palais. His father was a bank clerk, his mother ran a bakery business owned by one of his uncles, E. Otten, enlightened art lover who had, in this area, a definite influence on his nephew.
He studied The Rochelle High School where he was often the first in his class in drawing. Being also the nephew of the painter Charlopeau, it struck with its terms, ushered in seventeen years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nantes. Rapid progress and were at an exhibition organized with classmates, his watercolors obtained a real success.
Came to Paris at the Academie Julian, he was a pupil of Paul Albert Laurens, history painter, and Robert Pougheon which Huyghe wrote that "he had submitted all forms of voluntary stylizations."
